During summer early 2023 Jupiter Construction successfully completed a 30 week remodel and refurbishment project at Oasis Academy Parkwood in Scunthorpe, the project aimed at significant alterations and refurbishments to create a new food bank, café area, meeting area, store room, toilets with additional works including new windows. The contract was a JCT Minor works building contract 2016 edition.
Oasis Academy are a Multi Academy Trust with over 50 Academies spread across 5 regions in the country predominantly in the North of England.
It became evident that the project required a structural engineer to review the scope of works and reassess the project due to the many moving parts of this project. This led to a ceasing of works that was agreed with the client to mitigate and reduce and additional costs for either party showing a collaborative approach to solving a problem.
Items covered (in summary) in the scope of works included demolition, soft strip out, asbestos removal, groundworks, structural steel works, heating, and ventilation, associated electrical works, toilets and associated plumbing works, fencing to the external and final decorations.
Working within a live school environment demanded meticulous planning. Site Management, periodic Security checks, access and egress was tightly controlled as was the movement of materials. Noise management was carefully addressed as works commenced. A 'just in time' system was employed, and deliveries were scheduled to avoid peak school times.
The team involved in this project were very experienced from Contracts Management to Quantity Surveyor, Site Management and Health and Safety support, this extended to a robustly managed team of sub-contractors, Jupiter Construction prides itself on a reliable and suitably competent supply chain with a solid Pre-Construction phase built into all projects.
Jupiter Construction achieved success for the client, delivering a timely project completion whilst adhering to budgetary constraints, all despite the aforementioned structural issues that created a cessation of works for a period of time that was agreed and supported a value engineering principle, this was crucially important with this project, sectional handovers worked well with the schools’ strategic plans. A cornerstone of Jupiter Constructions methodology is the strict adherence and commitment to rigorous quality assurance inspections conducted by the Site Manager and Contracts Manager.
In summary, our successes in this project encompassed a comprehensive commitment to quality, timely delivery, budgetary adherence, value engineering, and strategic sectional handovers. These achievements underscore Jupiter Construction's dedication to excellence, client satisfaction, and the efficient execution of construction projects.
