Historical Significance

Magdale House, a large, detached property, boasts a natural stone construction and stone slate roof in the local vernacular style. With part of the property being Grade II listed, its historical charm is reflected in the architectural details dating back to the late 18th Century. The property is a two-storey building which has had several additions including a large extension in the 1980s that formed a porch, a utility room, a kitchen, bedrooms, and a single storey garage.

Project Objectives

1. Refurbishment and Conversion:

The primary goal was to refurbish the existing structure, preserving its historical features, and convert it into a purpose-built residential home for children in care.

2. External Works:

External enhancements included installing a new sprinkler tank and associated building to house it, new fencing for the rear elevation, and foundational work for garage masonry, new masonry to garage front.

Roof restoration, including stripping the existing roof, installing new roof spars, and reinstating existing roof tiles, was a crucial part of the external improvements.

3. Internal Works:

Internal renovations involved stripping out fixtures and fittings, removing the ground floor ceiling, and executing first fix and second fix electric, plumbing, and joinery works.

Plastering, new flooring, new staircase balustrade and the installation of a new fire partition wall were key components of the internal transformation.

Challenges and Adaptive Solutions

Design Changes:

Throughout the project, multiple design changes were necessitated by evolving end-user requirements. Jupiter Construction adeptly accommodated these changes, adjusting the scope and sequencing of works to meet the client's dynamic needs in a way that bolstered the relationship.

Communication and Collaboration:

Maintaining robust communication between the Jupiter project and on-site teams and Kirklees Council was pivotal. Regular updates and consultations ensured a high-quality service and facilitated the smooth exchange of project requirements/changes and progress.

Results and Adaptability:

Magdale House stands today as a testament to Jupiter Construction's adaptability and commitment to client satisfaction. The property has been meticulously transformed, blending historical charm with modern functionality to provide a nurturing environment for children in care.
