In November 2022, Jupiter Construction proudly concluded a comprehensive refurbishment project valued at £900,000 for a client PSK at William Henry Smith School, a historic institution under the auspices of the Smith Foundation Trust. Established in 1916 by Alderman William Smith, the school has played a pivotal role in providing education for young boys with learning difficulties. The recent refurbishment focused on the transformation of both the Lowry Building and Buildings 5 and 6, aiming to modernise and optimise these facilities to better serve the evolving needs of the school community.
Alderman William Smith, the first Mayor of Brighouse and a benefactor of the town, laid the foundation for the Smith Foundation Trust on the 16th of September 1916. Over the years, the school has been dedicated to the education of young boys with learning difficulties. Situated within its own estate, surrounded by green belt fields and designated vehicle parking areas, the school holds a significant place in the community.
Phase 1: Lowry Building Conversion
The first phase involved the conversion of the Lowry Building into a state-of-the-art therapy teaching accommodation.
Comprehensive remodelling and alterations were undertaken to create dedicated spaces for dance, movement, drama, music studios, and associated accommodation.
The refurbishment included structural enhancements, internal redesign, redecoration, and the integration of new mechanical and electrical installations.
Phase 2: Buildings 5 & 6 Remodelling
The second phase focused on the remodelling of Buildings 5 and 6 to provide enhanced accommodation.
Six pupil bedrooms with ensuites were crafted on the first floor, accompanied by improved staff live-in accommodation and associated facilities.
The scope encompassed extensive remodelling, structural adjustments, internal refurbishment, and the installation of new mechanical and electrical systems.
Limited Onsite Space and Deliveries
Space constraints onsite necessitated a strategic approach to material storage and delivery scheduling. A welfare compound was established, allowing materials to be brought in only when required. Deliveries were meticulously scheduled, considering the one-way entrance/exit, managed by our experienced site manager and trained banksman.
Project Management During School Operation
A critical challenge was executing the refurbishment without disrupting daily school operations. The project unfolded seamlessly during both term time and school holidays, requiring meticulous coordination to ensure the safety of students, staff, and construction personnel. Rigorous project management practices, including clear communication and strict safety protocols, ensured the success of this aspect of the project.
Regular Communication
To foster transparency and understanding, daily communication between our site manager and the school was maintained. This consistent dialogue proved essential for addressing any concerns promptly and keeping the school community informed about the project's progress.
School Presentation/Demonstration
Going above and beyond the contractual obligations, Jupiter Construction responded positively when the client requested a presentation and demonstration for school children engaged in construction activities. This initiative aimed to inspire and educate students about the construction process, showcasing the practical aspects of their learning environment.
The end results were met with great satisfaction from both the Client, PSK, and the end users—staff and pupils alike. The revitalized Lowry Building now serves as a modern therapy teaching space, equipped with cutting-edge facilities. Buildings 5 and 6, with their remodelled configurations, offer improved pupil bedrooms and staff accommodations, providing a comfortable and functional environment. The successful completion of this refurbishment project exemplifies Jupiter Construction's commitment to delivering high-quality construction solutions tailored to the unique needs of educational institutions. The collaboration between Jupiter Construction and William Henry Smith School has not only preserved the historical significance of the institution but has also positioned it for a bright and modern future.
