Harlow Carr

Harrogate

Project Overview

Jupiter Construction was appointed to deliver the construction and fit-out of a new Staff Welfare building at Harlow Carr for the Royal Horticultural Society. The project was part of the RHS’s ongoing investment in improving staff facilities and operational infrastructure.

The scheme involved the erection of a modern, energy-efficient building constructed using SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) technology, together with full internal fit-out and associated external works. The building is located within the Horticultural Service Yard at the end of Cragg Lane, positioned outside the boundaries of the public RHS gardens, allowing the works to be undertaken without disruption to visitors.

Client Overview

The Royal Horticultural Society is the UK’s leading gardening charity, dedicated to enriching lives through plants, gardens and horticulture. The Harlow Carr site supports a wide range of horticultural operations, and the new Staff Welfare building forms part of the RHS’s commitment to providing high-quality facilities that support staff wellbeing, sustainability and operational efficiency.

Scope of Works and Challenges Encountered

Staff Welfare Building (New Build)

  • Site establishment within the Horticultural Service Yard
  • Construction of the building using SIP panel technology
  • Full structural erection and weather-tight envelope
  • Complete internal fit-out to create modern staff welfare facilities
  • Connection to existing site services
  • Installation of external equipment, including an air source heat pump
  • Provision of external bin storage and cycle storage facilities
  • Associated hard and soft landscaping works

Key Challenges

Construction Within an Operational Service Yard

Although the site location is outside the public garden boundary, it remains a live operational environment. Jupiter Construction carefully planned site logistics and sequencing to ensure ongoing horticultural operations could continue safely alongside the works.

Sustainability and Energy Performance Requirements

The use of SIP panels and the installation of an air source heat pump required precise coordination to meet performance expectations relating to thermal efficiency, airtightness and long-term sustainability, while ensuring compliance with the project specification.
