From Site to Strategy – Nigel Stocks Earns His NVQ Level 7

At Jupiter Construction, we believe in progress—not just in projects, but in people.

That’s why we’re thrilled to celebrate Nigel Stocks, Contracts Manager and key member of our team, who has just completed his NVQ Level 7 in Construction Senior Management.

With nearly two decades in the industry and over two years at Jupiter, Nigel’s latest qualification is more than a certificate—it’s the culmination of a personal development journey and a bold step toward professional chartership.

The Journey

Q: What motivated you to go for the Level 7 NVQ?

I’ve always been keen on pushing and developing myself and learning more. I started in carpentry and joinery, earned my NVQ Level 3, moved into office roles, completed an HND in Construction Management, and now this. The Level 7 has been on my personal development plan for a while—it felt like the natural next step to deepen my knowledge and work toward CIOB chartership.

Q: How did you balance work and studying?

Discipline and routine. I set aside every Friday afternoon with a recurring calendar invite—so it was blocked out, visible, and consistent. That four-hour slot each week kept me on track without letting it effect other work commitments.

Q: Were there any parts of the course that surprised or challenged you?

Definitely. I didn’t expect to learn so much from my own team. Gathering evidence meant diving into processes I thought I already understood. Turns out, seeing how others approached things gave me fresh perspective and added value to how I work now.

Lessons & Growth

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you took from this qualification?

Organisation—taken to another level. It’s made me even more methodical, and I’ve adopted new practices I’ve seen others use effectively, a good example is how I now plan and consider resources available in the moment and in support of upcoming projects, documents like our training matrix and site management tracker have proved invaluable.

Q: Has this changed how you approach leadership or project delivery?

Yes, absolutely. I now see even more clearly how strong documentation and consistent processes can lift the whole team’s performance. It’s not just about what I do—it’s how that influences everyone reporting into me.

Q: Did it shift your view on the industry in any way?

The course opened my eyes   into how other companies operate. You realise there’s no one-size-fits-all, but you pick up best practices that can be applied at any level.

Support & Recognition

Q: Who supported you most during the process?

My Directors support was consistent and encouraging, especially helpful was his help identifying the right and most useful evidence. Of course the course tutor also played a key role, guiding me on what to include and how to frame it.

Q: How did the business back your development?

They backed me financially, which was a big vote of confidence. But more than that, every team member supported me - helping me source evidence, explaining their own processes - it became a collective effort.

Looking Forward

Q: What’s next for you now you’ve achieved this?

First, I’m focused on gaining chartership with the CIOB. Professionally, I’d like to continue developing my career within Jupiter Construction as my role and experience develop further through our larger and more complex projects. I believe this qualification puts me in a strong position to do both and I aim to put my learnings to the test!

Q: Any advice to someone considering the Level 7 NVQ themselves?

Be organised. Break it down into manageable chunks, stick to a routine, and be disciplined. The work is achievable—it’s the consistency that matters most.

Final Word from Leadership

“We’re incredibly proud of Nigel—not just for passing the Level 7, but for the leadership, passion, and drive he’s shown throughout. He’s a fantastic example of how we grow talent at Jupiter Construction.” - Graham Mattison, Construction Director
